A story of gradual improvements
We have been here and have reviewed this pub several times in the past, but only one review from 2022 has survived, even though I am convinced that there must have been more; but those older were under the previous owner anyway, and it has nothing to do with today’s operation. A middle-aged guy took over the pub sometime after Covid; he kept the pub and in the rest of the building he has a workshop and a warehouse on the ground floor and his new residence upstairs. Until last year, there was also a mail order house, but fortunately they eventually closed it down and so the pub is now visited by thirsty citizens only.
What will definitely interest beer connoisseurs is that there are three types of beers on tap, namely Radegast 10 and 12 and Kozel 11. Fortunately, the previous experiments in the form of the stale Ostrava Mustang are gone. They all taste good, Kozel pleasantly surprised me, which I generally did not have a very good opinion of, but they probably changed the brewer or something, because I like such a beer. The locals mostly bet on Radegast 10, it is very popular in the area and so it is a must to have it on tap; and the twelve is simply for connoisseurs who do not want to pour hectoliters into themselves, but two or three beers are enough to taste.
The environment is also gradually changing from the purely sterile interior of the past to a cozier one, although it is still not the same. In winter, the burning stove creates an atmosphere by itself, and the huge television hanging above it attracts all the fans to various sports events, but the simple absence of any ornaments on the wall or wooden accessories, or pictures or anything, simply leaves the feeling like in a waiting room at a hospital. Maybe it would be enough to change the layout of the tables a little more into the space and at an angle, and not like in the barracks, one after the other, beautifully at a right angle horizontally. You can get to the toilets from the stove to the right, although tiny, but functional. At the back there are a few steps to another glass part, where private parties are held, otherwise it is dark there. The area in front of the pub has undergone a major transformation, with a fenced outdoor garden covered with a completely new roof, so that the afternoon sun no longer beats down on those sitting there like a blizzard.
The clientele consists (as expected) of mostly local punks, you simply won’t meet any foreigners here all year round. But it’s quite gratifying to see that even the younger generation finds these places popular, because the tastes of the people here are really varied; from teenagers to retired people not long before the grave. In summer, the ice cream machine in front of the pub is a big attraction, and then the kids are always playing and screaming, and even passing cyclists and motorists stop, then it’s more lively. Everything is served by several young people who take turns, there is always at least one of them, either two different women or men; I can safely say that all are cool, they usually take drinks also outside under the roof.
One thing is certain; the owner of the building certainly won’t make any profit from the pub, those five or six regulars simply won’t pay all costs. That’s the fate of all village pubs today. And so, in my opinion, he subsidizes it from the income from his business and runs the pub as a service to the population; maybe that was one of the conditions when buying the building from the municipality, who knows. In any case, let’s be happy that it works here, a person at least sometimes just needs to go somewhere for a drink among others and Dolni Lhota is lucky to have it somewhere. On the other hand, the environment is so „empty“ and even when it’s full, the atmosphere is lost there. It’s a shame, but thanks anyway for doing a good job!
